Senior Protection & Automation Engineer
Location:
Remote (travel to Chicago as needed)
Start Date:
ASAP
Compensation:
$120‑145K/year
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Integrate protection relays and automation devices into distribution systems
Lead solution development and execution across project lifecycle
Support proposals with technical insights and cost estimation
Program and test custom control logic for applications such as source transfer
Coordinate with production and cross‑functional teams to ensure system integration
Develop and validate relay settings; execute factory and field testing
Provide post‑sales troubleshooting and technical support
Assist in system commissioning and field services as needed
Travel up to 20% (primarily to Chicago)
Requirements
Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s/PE license preferred)
10+ years in electric transmission/distribution systems, specifically in automation and Protection & Control
Strong experience with utility and commercial/industrial MV applications
Expertise in protection schemes, relay programming, and logic testing
Real‑time automation and SCADA system experience
Familiarity with communication protocols (DNP3.0, IEC 61850)
Proficiency with industry standards (IEEE, IEC, NFPA)
Nice-to-Haves
Hands‑on experience with SEL or similar manufacturers
Experience with backend standards and site commissioning
Exposure to communication standards and settings development
Consulting or OEM/solutions background
