Under the general supervision of the APP Supervisor for the Department of Neurological Surgery, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides patient care in Neurosurgery. The NP utilizes operational knowledge and expertise to provide primary and/or specialized health care services to patients with brain tumors, cerebrovascular conditions, general conditions, peripheral nerve conditions, and neurospine conditions. The NP evaluates healthcare treatments for surgical patients, coordinates with established surgical services, participates in ongoing research and quality assurance studies, and functions as a liaison to physicians, mid‑levels, physical and occupational therapists. The position requires special knowledge, skills, and abilities in the fields of neurosurgery and wound care, and performs additional duties as assigned.

The NP preview clinics to ensure appropriate preliminary imaging is completed for each scheduled patient (30–50 patients/week per APP), responds to patient calls and in‑basket items, conducts peer‑to‑peer authorizations, and covers in‑basket and clinics for other APPs when necessary. The NP author encounter notes, performs patient history and physical examinations, develops care plans, submits orders, and prepares an after‑visit summary (AVS). The NP supports a minimum of two faculty, primarily at the McGrath Outpatient Pavilion (MOP), Via Tazon (VTC), and Koman Outpatient Pavilion (KOP) practice locations, and may cover other sites to maintain departmental operational efficiency as directed by the APP Supervisor.

Responsibility and Work Requirements

Preview clinics to ensure appropriate imaging is completed for each scheduled patient (30–50 patients/wk per APP).

Respond to patient calls and in‑basket items.

Conduct peer‑to‑peer authorizations.

Cover in‑basket and clinics for fellow APPs when out of office.

Author encounter notes, perform patient history and physical examinations.

Develop care plans, submit orders, and prepare after‑visit summaries.

Support faculty at multiple practice locations and cover additional sites as needed.

Perform and supervise specialized procedures such as lumbar puncture, intrathecal chemotherapy, and ventricular‑peritoneal/lumbar peritoneal shunt adjustment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

Licensed as a California Registered Nurse (RN), California Nurse Practitioner (NP), and Furnishing License Certification.

National NP board certification in an aligned specialty: FNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, or ACNP.

BLS and ACLS certifications at time of hire, with commitment to obtain ART within six months.

Strong theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, pharmacology, counseling techniques, and interpersonal dynamics.

Experience performing initial history and physical examination, identifying major medical problems, and formulating appropriate plans.

Ability to analyze and interpret data meaningfully.

Experience and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.

Experience maintaining detailed medical information in an organized, retrievable manner.

Knowledge necessary for instructing house staff, medical students, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel in all aspects of surgical care.

Strong writing skills for medical reports, laboratory data, progress notes, policies, procedures, and protocols.

Ability to perform various medical procedures, diagnostic studies, and therapeutic modalities.

Working knowledge of medical terminology.

Ability to be trained in specialized medical equipment.

Ability to counsel patients and families, especially in delicate or end‑of‑life situations.

Effective communication skills with patients and other health‑care personnel.

Maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians, laboratory personnel, and other health‑care team members.

Ability to write orders for patient treatment plans.

Assessment of patient status and progress, reporting effectively to the physician in charge.

Knowledge of all treatment modalities necessary for patient care and well‑being, with skilled documentation.

Experience and skill in lumbar puncture, intrathecal chemotherapy, and shunt adjustments.

Independent work ability and task prioritization to meet strict guidelines and deadlines.

Excellent written and verbal communication, diplomacy, and flexibility to work effectively with staff, patients, and community agencies.

Knowledge of medical ethics and legal practice pertaining to medical and socio‑economic considerations.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of clinical and ancillary services within the UCSD Medical Center.

Special Conditions

Work location: all sites within the UCSD Health System, including satellite locations; reliable transportation required.

May require on‑call, overnight, evening, and weekend hours; flexible variable hours and short‑notice schedule changes accepted.

Employment subject to criminal background check.

Employment subject to pre‑employment physical for clinical roles involving patient contact.

Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $167,687 – $234,649 (prorated if appointment

Hourly Equivalent: $80.31 – $112.38.

Compensation determined by experience, skills, knowledge, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.

Vaccination & Certification Requirements Compliance with UC Policy on Vaccination Programs is required; life‑support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands‑on practice and in‑person skills assessment.
