Base pay range $53,764.00/yr - $85,138.00/yr
Description Under the direction of higher-level management, you would collect, prepare, analyze, and disseminate data used by the Department of Labor's Division of Research and Statistics. This may include data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Cooperative Programs, Unemployment Insurance (UI) and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) operations, the Bureau of the Census as well as other sources.
Responsibilities
Create and use databases for the collection, analysis, and manipulation of employment, economic and program data.
Conduct database and internet queries to collect and analyze information; manage subordinate staff in the above activities.
Develop applications to edit, validate, and conduct analysis of data; adhere to quality control and editing procedures in the collection and analysis of economic information and sample data.
Develop and present reports on labor market and program data using tabular, graphic, oral and narrative means; produce and validate UI related management reports.
Respond to requests for information from within and outside the Labor Department.
Qualifications NY HELPS Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications
Economist Trainee 1 Labor Research (Grade 14): A bachelor’s degree in economics or a bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in economics and an additional 6 credits from among the following coursework areas: computer science, economics, econometrics, mathematics, operations research, research methods, or statistics.
Economist Trainee 2 Labor Research (Grade 16): Same educational requirements plus one year of professional experience collecting, interpreting and analyzing economic information and data to prepare reports; and designing and evaluating long‑term simulations and economic models.
Senior Economist Labor Research (Grade 18): Same educational requirements plus two years of professional experience collecting, interpreting and analyzing economic information and data to prepare reports; and designing and evaluating long‑term simulations and economic models.

Reassignment Qualifications (DOL Employees Only) Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one (1) year of permanent or contingent‑permanent, competitive service in an Economist Trainee 1 Labor Research, Economist Trainee 2 Labor Research, or Senior Economist Labor Research 1; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current list for this location, if one exists.
70.4 Transfer Qualifications New York State employees with at least one (1) year of permanent or contingent‑permanent, competitive service as a Grade 11 or higher AND a passing score on the Professional Career Opportunities – Select Titles exam, as well as:
A bachelor's degree or higher in economics; OR
A bachelor's degree or higher including or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in economics and an additional 6 semester credit hours from among the following coursework areas: computer science, economics, econometrics, mathematics, operations research, research methods, or statistics.
Note: Candidates must not have failed the most recent examination for this title. Appointments are made at the Trainee 1 level. Applicants for 70.4 transfer must provide college transcripts that document how they meet the above-referenced educational requirements. In order to be considered for 70.4 transfer, all transfer criteria must be met.
