About This Job The Office of Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian seeks a

Director of Public Affairs and Administration

to communicate the Commission’s work to Texans and manage the Commissioner’s office. The role serves as the primary point person for statewide press and media, builds outreach strategies, and coordinates the Commissioner’s public engagements.

Responsibilities

Produce, manage, and update a comprehensive outreach and public‑relations strategy and communicate it to the team.

Serve as the Commissioner’s point person for statewide press and media and field press calls.

Build, execute, and track outreach activities through mail, social media, email, phone, and other platforms.

Manage day‑to‑day office operations: schedule, field calls, respond to constituent inquiries, and prepare the Commissioner for meetings.

Distill complex technical information into layman terms for emails, press releases, one‑pager documents, and social media posts.

Develop a communications plan, track progress, and ensure important information is being conveyed to the public.

Schedule media appearances on television, radio, and digital platforms for the Commissioner.

Respond to press and other email inquiries and plan and organize all press conferences and other media events.

Monitor important energy issues and develop necessary information to respond to constituent correspondence.

Proactively respond to and communicate with other governmental entities regarding oil or gas related questions.

Oversee and grow public outreach initiatives and develop a comprehensive list of media contacts in Texas and nationally.

Collaborate with agency communications staff to ensure a consistent and comprehensive communication strategy is developed and deployed.

Develop and write talking points for Commissioner Christian to use in speeches and communications with stakeholders and constituents.

Manage special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited four‑year college or university.

At least one (1) year of work experience in government, communications, or government affairs.

Experience with the Texas Legislature or the Executive Branch of Texas state government (preferred).

Knowledge of the issues related to the Railroad Commission of Texas (preferred).

Advanced technology skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms, desktop publishing programs (Publisher, PagePlus or Xara, Constant Contact or MailChimp) and other technological solutions.

Excellent written and oral communication skills appropriate for interacting with government employees and officials.

Excellent organizational skills.

Ability to multi‑task and handle several important projects at one time.

Ability to handle confidential information.
