Director of Behavioral Health

to lead and expand comprehensive, integrated behavioral health services across 10 clinic locations serving Merced and Stanislaus Counties. This is a senior leadership role for a clinician who wants to shape strategy, mentor teams, and improve access to high-quality, culturally responsive care in an underserved region.

What You’ll Do Clinical & Organizational Leadership

Provide strategic and operational leadership for behavioral health services across a multi-site clinic system.

Supervise, mentor, and develop LCSWs, LMFTs, MSW interns, and behavioral health staff, ensuring clinical excellence and professional growth.

Serve as a key thought partner to the Chief Medical Officer and executive leadership, helping advance integrated behavioral health within primary care.

Program Development & Clinical Oversight

Design, implement, and continuously improve evidence-based behavioral health programs that expand access and improve patient outcomes.

Ensure consistent application of trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and harm-reduction approaches.

Oversee clinical documentation standards, workflows, credentialing, training, and supervision requirements.

Quality, Compliance & Regulatory Excellence

Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on patient outcomes, access, and operational efficiency.

Ensure compliance with California BBS regulations, Medi-Cal documentation requirements, HIPAA, and accreditation standards.

Prepare for and respond to audits, site visits, and corrective action plans as needed.

Oversee behavioral health program budgets, resource allocation, and financial sustainability.

Support grant oversight and identify opportunities for program expansion and community partnerships.

Balance clinical leadership with administrative and operational responsibilities in a complex, fast-growing environment.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

Work closely with medical, nursing, and administrative leaders to deliver fully integrated, team-based care.

Represent behavioral health programs in leadership meetings and community partnerships.

Build strong relationships with local organizations to promote mental health access and awareness.

Who We’re Looking For Required Qualifications

Active California license in good standing as one of the following:

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PhD or PsyD) with the California Board of Psychology

Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field

Doctoral degree required for Psychologist candidates

3 to 5+ years of post-licensure leadership experience , ideally in a multi-site, community health, or FQHC setting.

Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary clinical teams and integrated behavioral health programs.

Strong working knowledge of Medi-Cal, HIPAA, behavioral health compliance, and quality improvement frameworks.

BLS Certification

from the American Heart Association (or ability to obtain).

Ability to work on-site approximately 80% of the time.

Strongly Preferred

Experience in FQHCs, community clinics, or underserved populations

Background in program development, grant-funded services, or system-wide behavioral health expansion

Compensation is dependent on licensure, experience, and scope of responsibility:

LCSW / LMFT - Salary Range:

$110,000 – $150,000

PhD / PsyD (Licensed Clinical Psychologist) - Salary Range:

$140,000 – $190,000
