Unit Director - Critical Care/ICU (UPMC)
UPMC Chautauqua is seeking a Registered Nurse with leadership experience for an exciting opportunity as a Unit Director for their Critical Care/Intensive Care Unit! Our ideal candidate will have critical care/ICU and leadership experience.
About the Unit The unit is a mixed ICU and step-down unit focused on patients requiring a higher level of medical and surgical care, including ventilator, BiPAP, high flow oxygen therapy and acute post‑operative surgical patients.
Responsibilities
Sets high standards of performance for self and others by imposing standards of excellence, developing inquiry skills, creating developmental paths for staff, initiating innovation in staff development, supporting specialty certification, developing a best practice climate for growth and development of students and new nurses, actively recruiting nursing students through exceptional clinical experiences, and supporting shared governance through a unit‑based professional practice council and staff feedback to improve care, nursing practice, and work.
Establishes a culture of caring by promoting patient‑centered decisions within Relationship Based Care, using the nursing process that meets clinical, psychological, and spiritual needs, ensuring nursing practice meets established Clinical Standards of Performance, applying national best practices, building a culture of excellence in patient care, promoting interdisciplinary partnership and consultation through committee participation, setting clinical, financial, and human resources priorities, demonstrating fiscal responsibility in budget development and managing flexible staffing patterns to meet patient care needs.
Demonstrates the ability to create a shared vision by applying critical thinking, utilizing financial and quality data, involving staff and key stakeholders in vision development within shared governance, orchestrating complex change, using appropriate interpersonal styles to gain acceptance of ideas, supporting staff during difficult transitions, and influencing the external environment through professional and advocacy organization participation.
Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams, mentoring, modeling uplifting and positive communication, resolving conflict effectively, extending trust, listening first, creating transparency in communication, confronting reality, clarifying expectations, caring for patients and self through departmental scheduling, conveying information clearly, coaching staff on cultural diversity and addressing workplace horizontal violence and impairment, and creating an environment that recognizes and values differences in staff, physicians, patients, and communities.
Collaborates with medical staff to monitor patient outcomes, set clinical quality priorities, recommend and implement professional improvements and initiatives, implement unit‑based patient safety initiatives, monitor dashboard indicators and quality to meet organizational goals, develop action plans to address concerns, utilize research and evidence‑based practice to support clinical care, share learning with other units, analyze nurse and patient satisfaction data, and support staff nurses in evidence‑based practice and quality improvement initiatives.
The Unit Director is expected to lead and develop all clinicians that report directly to them, build strong leadership and communication skills, provide mentorship in daily leadership responsibilities, support clinicians in oversight of direct reports, including difficult conversations, performance reviews, and recruitment.
Qualifications
Minimum of 4 years of progressive leadership experience required with relevant clinical experience preferred.
Analytical ability necessary to evaluate staff, address and improve clinical issues, and devise solutions to complex problems.
Leadership ability to develop staff, establish and maintain standards of performance within a national context for professional nursing practice and comply with administrative requirements.
Superior interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to effectively create relationships to support a healing environment with patients, families, staff, physicians and hospital personnel including senior management in written and verbal communication.
BS/BSN required at time of hire, master’s degree/MSN required.
Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in a practicing state.
BSN or higher in nursing required; if BSN not in nursing, a master’s or higher degree in nursing is required; if master’s not in nursing, a BSN required; if master’s or MSN not present at hire, enrollment in a master’s or MSN program within one year of hire and completion within three years required.
BLS issued by AHA within 30 days of hire; PALS within one year of hire.
