Position Summary:
The Lab Associate is responsible for processing and isolating human and primary cells, and conducting quality control analysis. The Cell Processing team takes whole blood and tissue and breaks it down into different components (i.e., white blood cells, red blood cells, etc.) using reagents and standard lab processes like centrifuging.
A Day in the Life of a Lab Associate, Cell Processing at Discovery Life Sciences:
Receive specimen and follow standard procedures for processing
Use lab processing equipment and techniques such as centrifuges and pipetting
Document procedures as needed
Verify quality of cells after processing
Position Qualifications (Education, Skills, Experience):
High‑school Diploma or GED required; Associate’s or higher‑level degree preferred
Must be able to tolerate the sight of body fluids including blood/blood products
Laboratory experience in the life science or healthcare industry preferred (including wet labs during degree program)
Must be able to read, interpret, and communicate basic technical documents and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Able to learn and operate standard laboratory equipment
Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Docs
Key Responsibilities:
Process primary human blood using centrifugation
Isolate human primary cells using immunomagnetic isolation technology
Generate electronic & written records based upon testing and analysis of cell and/or tissue samples
Maintain and organize laboratory work area, consumables, and equipment
Prepare buffers, reagents, and other laboratory consumables
Test cell culture media and reagents
Wash and maintain lab‑ware
Report out‑of‑specification products to managers
Handle and dispose of biological waste
Comply with laboratory policies and procedures
Maintain finished goods inventory
Perform QA/QC on finished goods
Maintain equipment
Train new lab staff
Validate new SOPs/equipment

Location and work hours:
This is an on‑site position at our Huntsville, AL campus
Work hours are Monday – Friday 9 am – 6 pm
Additionally, will work one Saturday per month for 5 hours (rotating with other colleagues)
