Job Summary The Controller is responsible for overseeing Home Start’s accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls. This position partners closely with the CFO to manage fiscal systems, audits, and month‑end close processes. The Controller will play a key role in improving efficiency, strengthening internal controls, and supporting financial decision‑making across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll reconciliation, and bank reconciliations.

Own the month‑end and year‑end close process, including maintaining the close calendar, preparing and reviewing key schedules, journal entries, adjusting entries, and ensuring all balance sheet accounts are fully reconciled in a timely manner.

Prepare accurate, complete monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and fund accounting standards.

Coordinate annual financial audit and related grant compliance reviews, serving as the main contact for external auditors.

Review and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local grant requirements.

Manage the organization’s fixed asset processes, including capitalization, asset tracking, depreciation schedules, asset retirement, and compliance with internal capitalization policies and audit requirements.

Serve as a core member of the Financial Edge implementation team, supporting system configuration, chart of accounts redesign, data migration, testing, and development of new workflows and reporting tools.

Maintain and enhance accounting policies and procedures, ensuring documentation is current, compliant with 2 CFR 200, and reflective of best practices in nonprofit financial management.

Assist with cash flow forecasting and scenario planning.

Support budget development through preparing templates, entering budgets into systems, and reconciling budgets to awards.

Oversee grant tracking and fund allocations to ensure accurate and transparent reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds.

Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Partner with Program, HR, and Development teams to support budgeting, grant reporting, and contract compliance.

Provide training and guidance to non‑financial managers on budget monitoring and expense tracking.

Assist with preparation of adhoc financial reports for management, Board of Directors, and funders.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required; CPA or CPA candidacy preferred.

Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2‑3 years in a nonprofit environment.

Demonstrated experience in fund accounting, audit preparation, and month‑end close.

Experience with HUD contracts and budgeting strongly preferred.

Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge or Financial Edge NXT accounting software strongly preferred.

Skills and Competencies

Deep understanding of GAAP, 2 CFR 200 and nonprofit accounting principles.

Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
