Position Overview Montana State University invites applications for the position of Dean of the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering (NACOE). The dean will lead the college’s mission to excel in teaching, research, and service, while advancing institutional enrollment, faculty development, and external partnerships. The role is a full‑time, tenure‑track, full‑professor appointment, with salary commensurate with experience and a 1.0 FTE.

Duties and Responsibilities

Effective management, administration, and leadership for the college, ensuring smooth operation of departments and affiliated offices.

Foster a culture of continuous improvement in faculty–student engagement, curriculum streamlining, and research enterprise.

Advocate for interdisciplinary collaborations within the college, university, and community.

Ensure positive accreditation outcomes for individual programs and overall university accreditation.

Improve student retention and grow enrollment, with particular emphasis on graduate students.

Represent NACOE and MSU to internal and external constituencies, advancing the college’s mission and innovative programs.

Secure external funds for college initiatives through fundraising, grant writing, and donor outreach.

Support faculty in teaching, research, and scholarship, fostering professional development and shared governance.

Contribute to the University’s mission through engagement with academic governance and university committees.

Build a bright future for NACOE by demonstrating ethical leadership, creative communication, and strategic vision.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Earned doctorate from an accredited institution.

Exemplary record of research/scholarship activities, teaching, and service to the university and broader communities.

Qualified for tenure within an academic unit in NACOE at the rank of full professor.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Broad record of administrative and scholarly experience in a research university, with direct supervisory and budget‑management experience.

Strong communication skills, evidenced by writing, speaking, and listening.

Ability to foster teaching, research, and service of faculty in a student‑centered environment.

Experience with faculty development, performance assessments, and evaluation of promotion and tenure.

Demonstrated understanding and support for lands‑grant mission and interdisciplinary programs.

Proven fiscal management and commitment to shared governance.

Successful fundraising experience and commitment to building external resources.

Experience with stakeholder communication at university, state, and national levels.
