Job Summary The

Gas Directional Drill Operator/Locator

safely operates directional drilling rigs to install and service mainline conduit via horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The operator works with the Line team to locate utilities, verify existing utilities, and ensure drilling depths avoid underground obstructions.

Responsibilities

Operate the drill rig efficiently and prepare the job so the bore can be performed safely.

Pothole all utilities that will be paralleled or crossed during the bore shot.

Verify existing utilities and locate the drill head from point A to point B without hitting any utilities at the correct depth.

Hook up the swivel, reamer, and pipe product that will be pulled back to complete the bore shot.

Walk out the bore shot before it starts to develop a plan for going above or below each utility or obstacle in the bore path.

Pull back the product with the correct hole opener and utilize the correct mud mixture to insure the product moves from point B to point A.

Inspect and maintain equipment and maintain the rig regularly.

Provide assistance and training to all drilling trainees.

Implement best practices for utility verification and read blueprints to assist in preparing drill log records.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

1 year of related experience.

Operator qualification before beginning work.

OSHA 10 certification.

Transportation Worker Identification Credential.

Ability to perform basic maintenance of drill equipment and mixing unit.

Ability to identify and distinguish colors of utility flags and markings on the ground.

Preferred Qualifications

2 or more years of experience.

CDL Class A license with tanker endorsement.

Experience operating Vermeer and/or Ditchwitch directional drills.

Experience locating with Subsite and/or Digitrack locating equipment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment This role is field‑based and requires frequent bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting. The operator may lift up to 50 pounds and work in inclement weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind. Precision hand‑eye coordination and the ability to identify utility colors are essential.
