Job Summary The Gas Directional Drill Operator/Locator safely operates directional drill rigs or manages utility locating for a gas drill crew to install and service mainline conduits via HDD. This position supports the Line team and works closely with departmental personnel to ensure accurate drilling depths, avoid underground utilities, and maintain rig efficiency.
Responsibilities
Prepare the job and drill to ensure the shot can be performed safely.
Pothole all utilities that will be paralleled or crossed during the bore shot.
Verify existing utilities and fill water tanks with water.
Combine water with chemicals for boring per ground conditions.
Locate the drill head from point A to point B without hitting any utilities at the correct depth.
Hook up swivel, reamer, and pipe product to be pulled back and complete the bore shot.
Walk out the bore shot to verify all utilities have been located and plan to go above or below obstacles.
Pull back the product with the correct hole opener and utilize the correct mud mixture to ensure the product travels from point B to point A.
Inspect and maintain equipment and rig regularly.
Provide assistance and training to drilling trainees.
Implement best practices for utility verification.
Read blueprints and assist in preparing drill log records.
Qualifications
High school diploma, or equivalent.
One year of relevant experience.
Current and valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.
Current OSHA 10 Certification.
Preferred
Five or more years of experience.
Experience operating Vermeer and/or Ditchwitch Directional Drills.
Experience locating with Subsite and/or Digitrack Locating Equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment This job operates in a field environment, requiring extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and twisting, often in inclement weather such as extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind. Lifting up to 50 pounds and maintaining 20‑foot vision are required. The role is physically active with precise hand‑eye coordination and color identification.
