Reports to: Mobile Services Supervisor

Employment type: Part‑Time (20 hours)

Pay: $14.00 per hour with a $2 differential when driving the large bus.

Work schedule: Non‑Exempt

Mobile Services Driver‑Assistant . Help bring library services beyond our walls and into neighborhoods!

Position Summary Drives the Bookmobile and Outreach vehicles, adhering to department schedules. Provides direct public service and performs circulation duties on the vehicles and in the office.

Job Functions

Drives and parks the vehicles safely. Performs daily pre‑trip vehicle maintenance check and notes any issues on the vehicle’s pre‑trip form. Promptly reports any issues with vehicles to supervisors and Facilities. Drives vehicles to maintenance and repair appointments and helps keep them neat and clean.

Drives and parks the Bookmobile to regular stops in Middlefield and surrounding areas, the Fun Bus at Outreach events, and the transit vehicle to homes and Amish schools.

Checks materials out to patrons, checks in returned items, and correctly shelves returned items on the vehicle and in the office. Checks for reserves and replenishes shelves and displays as needed for each stop.

Writes up patron requests for materials and includes all pertinent information on the form.

Provides Readers Advisory services on vehicles and in the office.

Places holds for patrons, searches for and routes daily hold requests.

Answers phones when in the Mobile Services office and assists patrons on the phone as needed. Helps prepare vehicles for the next shift and assists with volunteers and attends parades and other events.

Promotes seasonal programs on the vehicles, such as the summer reading program.

Checks employee e‑mail, reads Branching Out, and other GCPL communications.

Keeps supervisor informed of any problems with current stops, including patron requests to change parking areas or discontinue a stop. Recommends titles and/or subject areas to supervisor for possible purchase and assists with weeding and cancelling books.

Attends training as required or recommended by administration or supervisor.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Willingness and adaptability to work in a changing work environment.

Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Must have sufficient computer skills/abilities to use the library’s online computer system, e‑mail, Internet and online databases, social media, and the like.

Must be able to work independently.

Must be familiar with library resources.

Ability to operate all the controls of mobile library vehicles.

Have basic mechanical understanding.

Ability to carry out assigned routes on time.

Safely observes all PERRP procedures.

High school diploma or GED.

A valid driver’s license is required to operate library‑owned vehicles and a clean driving record (no moving violations or at‑fault accidents in the last five years) must be maintained at all times.

Reliable transportation to meet work obligations such as meetings and delivering holds to patrons when necessary.

Successful completion of a background check.

Physical Requirements

Ability to regularly lift and carry 30–40 lb. bags of books up and down vehicle steps.

Ability to work in confined space.

Ability to operate objects, tools, or controls – including computers, phones, and office equipment.

Competence in completing tasks that involve reading or visual inspection, with or without visual aids.

Must be able to bend, stretch, walk, and/or kneel to shelve books on the vehicle at both the highest and lowest shelving.
