Visitor Services Assistant (Seasonal) National Park Service

Summary Serve as a representative to answer questions, offer guidance, monitor sites, and maintain relations with park partners and concessions while on roving patrols throughout National Parks.

Key Dates Likely Entry On Duty: March – May 2026.

Open to the first 100 applicants. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 EST on 12/28/2025.

Duties

Provide visitor services including patrol, roving, fixed‑post assignments and public programs.

Participate in day‑to‑day operation of a seasonal contact station.

Site monitoring and resource protection.

Operate two‑way radio equipment.

Respond verbally to visitor inquiries, offering information and guidance.

Manage interactions with individuals who are distressed, confused, frustrated, difficult, or even hostile.

For GS‑04: monitor special‑use permits and maintain relations with partners, concessions, and stakeholders.

For GS‑04: educate customers on rules, regulations, and safety concerns.

For GS‑04: direct visitors and the public to appropriate resources.

For GS‑04: assist in medical or other emergencies up to level of training.

For GS‑05: provide informal interpretation and public orientation on natural, cultural, and historical resources.

For GS‑05: provide information on management policies and legislative updates.

For GS‑05: operate general computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, database).

For GS‑05: gather incident information and notify appropriate personnel.

For GS‑05: assess situations and determine appropriate responses per policy guidelines.

Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the announcement closing date 12/28/2025.

GS‑04 Level

One year of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work.

Two years of education above high school (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical institution.

Equivalent combination of experience and education equal 100% of the standards.

GS‑05 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑04 level.

Four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours).

Equivalent combination of experience and education equal 100% of the standards.

Volunteer experience and foreign education may be credited following the guidelines above.

Conditions of Employment

U.S. citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Male applicants must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement.

Direct Deposit participation required.

Occupancy of government quarters may be required; housing may be available.

Uniform required; uniform allowance provided.

Work may include on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.

Motor‑vehicle operation may be required; driver’s license and records required.

ICTAP/CTAP Statement Eligible candidates must meet all OPM qualification standards, selective placement factors, and be rated at least at the well‑qualified level on all competencies.

Physical Demands Standing for long periods, walking, bending, lifting moderate items, and performing sedentary work. Mental stress due to high volume of personal contacts.

Work Environment Work often performed in small outdoor structures with exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Some locations are at high elevation, rugged terrain, or dense populations. High vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone in isolated locations.
