Water Maintenance Worker
City of Hutchinson, Kansas
The City of Hutchinson is seeking a Water Maintenance Worker to perform maintenance and repair of the city’s potable water distribution infrastructure, ensuring safe drinking water and fire protection for citizens.
Responsibilities
Find and repair water main breaks and leaks; ensure utilities in the work zone are properly located and traffic control hazards are mitigated.
Operate heavy and other equipment to excavate, perform repair work, and restore concrete, asphalt, and brick streets and driveway cuts to standards.
Perform ongoing preventative maintenance, including flushing and inspecting fire hydrants, locating and exercising valve stems, and repairing broken or inoperable valves and fire hydrants.
Respond to customer complaints and concerns (e.g., low pressure, water quality); take readings and water samples to troubleshoot.
Cleans and disinfects water mains and services; tests and replaces water meters and curb stops as needed; maintains accurate work order records.
Locate water mains and services for construction projects; adjust meter pits and valve boxes; paint fire hydrants and set hydrant backflow carts; ensure accurate utility location.
Assist with installing new city water service valves, hydrants, and other infrastructure as needed.
Perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
What You'll Need To Be Successful
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience:
1–3 years of related experience preferred; if hired, the employee is expected to acquire the necessary skills within 6 months.
Certifications/Licenses:
Must possess or obtain a valid Kansas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within 90 days; preferred: Class I or higher Water Operator certification, Cross Connection knowledge, Competent Person for Excavation and Trenching, and Confined Space Certification (within 1 year).
Residential Requirement:
Must live within 25 minutes of the City of Hutchinson Public Works facility and be able to report to the facility within 30 minutes for after‑hours emergency calls.
