Job Summary and Qualifications Under the direction of the SPD Manager/Director, the Coordinator of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) provides the delivery of efficient and effective sterile processing within the hospital. The Sterile Processing Coordinator supervises and develops SPD staff; assists the SPD Manager/Director in planning, directing, and monitoring unit operations; and manages fiscal and quality aspects of the unit. The Coordinator works with SPD leadership to ensure that services meet national, state, and medical‑center standards while being safe, appropriate, and cost‑effective.

Responsibilities

Serve as a role model for staff and customers.

Maintain an environment of continuous learning.

Supervise, coach, and mentor departmental staff.

Ensure orientation and annual competencies are developed, evaluated, and maintained.

Oversee the assembly of surgical trays and packs for the operating room.

Ensure instruments and sterility are provided according to standards of professional practice.

Implement and monitor critical processes to reduce unit‑specific errors.

Maintain communication with the OR to ensure proper level of service and quality.

Perform instrument tray quality checks and monitor compliance to tray lists, and proper packaging and processing.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Central Sterile Certification required in South Carolina hospitals and strongly preferred in Georgia and Florida hospitals.

Prior sterilization and surgical instrumentation experience preferred.

5+ years of experience as a central sterile technician.

1–2 years as lead/supervisor; excellent customer service, CSP equipment use, ability to troubleshoot equipment; ability to communicate with all levels of OR/CSP customers.

Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CSPT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician required.
