Position Summary The Athletic Trainer (ATC) is responsible for assisting Physicians and/or Mid‑level Providers in the clinic setting as well as in other settings such as the hospital and within the DME department. Duties include fitting and education of all Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as prescribed by the physician, application and removal of casts, and coordination of all aspects of the DME program including insurance and billing. The ATC acts as a liaison between staff, physician, and DME supervisor and manager, and assists in general maintenance of equipment, supplies, and exam rooms.

Essential Job Functions / Accountabilities

Ensures that proper patient forms are complete, current, and entered into the computer; checks the EMR for progress notes and stat orders, prepares charge tickets, and acts on any stat orders.

Enter DME charges with appropriate modifiers based on insurance requirements and conducts accurate dispensing of DME in the inventory management system.

Obtains authorizations from insurance companies for patient durable medical equipment, checks patients’ insurance benefits, and provides detailed explanation of coverage and benefits to patients per DME guidelines.

Fits patients with prescribed orthosis, including patient evaluation, modification and fitting, training the patient on fit and function, and answering any DME questions.

Schedules DME appointments for patients and sends referrals to the appropriate vendor based on insurance restrictions to ensure patients can obtain the prescribed medical equipment.

Provides back‑up coverage and assists in daily office routine when needed in other areas.

Monitors and maintains office equipment; orders office supplies, orthopedic/medical equipment, and supplies. Cleans, sterilizes, and stocks/maintains examination rooms and equipment. Maintains cleanliness of all clinical areas and exam rooms, restocks within budgetary constraints, checks and cleans equipment, and reports need for repair or maintenance to manager.

Assists physicians and/or physician’s assistant with special procedures, gathers necessary instruments, positions the patient, and responds to instructions from the physician or mid‑level provider. Includes removal of dressing and wraps, application and removal of casts and splints, and application and patient education on DME.

Collects necessary data and instructional materials for discharged patients and ensures patients are aware of follow‑up appointment times and locations.

Provides patient education on the physician’s plan of care (hand‑outs, return demonstration, etc.) and ensures charge tickets are marked appropriately for equipment and supplies given to patients.

Attends in‑services and departmental meetings.

Performs all other duties not specifically assigned.

Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field from an accredited university athletic training program required.

Experience: 3–5 years of demonstrated experience as an Athletic Trainer or related field preferred.

Technical Skills: N/A.

Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Current license issued by the Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy/Athletic Training (OTPTAT) Board to practice Athletic Training in the State of Ohio required; Certified by the Board of Certification (BOC), Inc. for Athletic Trainers preferred; BLS required.

Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, 1/2 Day Wednesday & Friday.

Status: Part‑Time 28 hours per week.
