Summary Description Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, collaborates with the general education teacher, monitors and evaluates outcomes, and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical demands and special requirements include attending school meetings and activities outside instructional hours and completing required courses in behavioral management.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of MCPS curriculum and special education program.

Knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.

Knowledge of elementary math teaching methods.

Knowledge of ESSA, IDEA, and related policies.

Ability to provide instructional support and adapt programs for students with disabilities.

Excellent communication skills and collaboration with students, teachers, and parents.

Knowledge and application of the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Education, Training, Experience

Bachelor’s degree in special education, with knowledge of learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.

Student teaching or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level.

Eligibility for Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.

Certification in a content area desirable.
