Introduction The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is expanding its Religious Services Department and hiring multiple Muslim Chaplains to provide spiritual services to incarcerated people across the state.

Position Highlights

This position is full‑time, 35 hours a week, following a first shift schedule with a flexible schedule based on program and facility needs, and is entitled to excellent benefits including health and dental.

Candidates selected will be required to attend the 14‑week Training Academy in Cheshire, CT.

Additional information will be provided during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

Administer rites and sacraments.

Prepare and preach sermons.

Confere with visiting clergy.

Provide counseling to individuals, families, and staff.

Collaborate with facility staff on religious concerns.

Provide worship services during holidays.

About the Department The Connecticut Department of Correction is a diverse agency that operates 13 correctional facilities and provides supervision and re‑entry programming. The Religious Services Unit offers trauma‑informed presence, pastoral care, spiritual guidance, religious facilitation, and programming that reduces recidivism, delivering over 80,000 hours of ministry annually.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Graduation from an accredited three‑year postgraduate theological seminary;

or

a Master of Divinity degree or its equivalent;

or

completion of all formal religious training required by a recognized religious denomination necessary to perform the pastoral role.

One (1) year of pastoral experience or equivalent within a recognized religious denomination.

Preferred Qualifications

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) experience.

Experience working with diverse at‑risk populations.

Experience with diverse cultures and faith traditions.

Ability to work independently and multi‑task, keeping records and schedules organized.

Experience working in a team environment with others from varying backgrounds and beliefs.

Special Requirements

Must be ordained or commissioned by a recognized religious body and endorsed by an acceptable denominational authority; endorsement must be ongoing and uninterrupted while employed.

May be required to hold a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

May be required to travel.

Working Conditions Incumbents may need to lift and restrain individuals or inmates, may have exposure to communicable/infectious diseases, and may face risks of injury from assaultive or abusive individuals. Conditions may be disagreeable.
