Role Summary The Advanced Clinical Social Worker (ACSW) clinician independently provides highly skilled direct clinical social work evaluations and treatment to adults in crisis with complex behavioral and social problems through comprehensive clinical assessments.

Job Duties

Provide skilled direct clinical social work evaluations and treatment to adult individuals in crisis with complex behavioral and social problems via comprehensive assessments.

Partner with law enforcement during mental health crisis responses, guiding officers in de‑escalation and ensuring individuals are connected to treatment rather than jail.

Provide on‑going training and consultation to law enforcement officers on mental illness, trauma, and substance use, including continuing education refreshers.

Assist the Police Department in navigating systems by linking officers to community mental health providers, shelters, social services, and diversionary programs.

Provide follow‑up care and coordinate post‑crisis support to reduce repeat police encounters.

Partner with the Bridgeport Police Department on community trust‑building activities such as family engagement, stigma reduction, and collaborative problem‑solving.

Conduct crisis assessments and interventions, including risk management.

Maintain documentation of all served individuals.

Enhance communication across the local behavioral health system, including forensic, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems.

Provide emergency certification for transport to emergency rooms.

Educate local providers and law enforcement on dynamics of behavioral health problems, homelessness, and high‑risk clients.

Provide direct clinical care in community settings, including face‑to‑face assessments in community and criminal justice settings.

Southwest Connecticut Mental Health System (SWCMHS) oversees contracts with private agencies and residential providers in the southwest region, offering inpatient, outpatient, ACT services, and community support for adults with severe behavioral health disabilities, including a mobile crisis intervention team.

Requirements All state employees must adhere to Connecticut’s policy for a drug‑free workplace. A comprehensive medical examination, including a drug screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience One (1) year of experience as a licensed clinical social worker.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience writing emergency certificates.

Experience assessing and completing risk management assessments in a mobile crisis or acute community setting.

Experience with co‑occurring disorders, including mental health, substance use, trauma, and persistent medical conditions.

Experience providing community‑based behavioral health services.

Experience providing consultation, education, and training to community providers, families, and law enforcement.

Experience practicing interpersonal and communication skills.

Experience working with law enforcement officers.

Experience providing training and consultation on mental illness, trauma, and substance use, including continuing education refreshers.

Special Requirements

Must possess and retain a license to practice clinical social work pursuant to Sec. 20‑195 (m‑z) of the Connecticut General Statutes.

Must possess and maintain eligibility for participation in federal health care programs as defined in 42 U.S. Code § 1320a‑7b(f).

May be required to have knowledge of sign language and communication ability with deaf and hearing‑impaired individuals in designated positions.

May be required to have ability in Spanish oral and written communication in designated positions.

May be required to be a certified Substance Abuse/HIV Supervisor.

May be required to travel.
