Temporary Field Research Technician This temporary position will run from May 2026 through October 2026 and is based in Ithaca, New York. It is an hourly professional, non‑exempt role with an advertised salary of $20/hr, 40 hours per week, and an anticipated start date of 15 May 2026. The position is open until filled.

Position Summary The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative study of eco‑evolutionary responses to climate affecting the partridge pea, Chamaecrista fasciculata, an annual legume in central and eastern North America. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining a large common garden experiment (~7,000 plants) in Ithaca, New York, preparing and planting seeds, building infrastructure, collecting trait and fitness data, entering data, performing maintenance tasks, and processing samples in the lab. The technician will also collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students.

Duties and Responsibilities

Collect field data on transplanted seeds, including fitness components (germination success, survival, reproductive success, fecundity) and trait data (flowering time, plant size, leaf morphological characteristics). Time: 75%.

Communicate with the PI and project leaders, sharing datasets and troubleshooting challenges that arise. Time: 10%.

Prepare and maintain the field site for the common garden, including mowing, tilling, weeding, setting up fencing, establishing experimental treatments, and ensuring equipment is in working order. Time: 15%.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Coursework in ecology, plant biology, genetics, or related fields.

Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

Desire to train and mentor other team members.

Comfortable with manual labor, including use of common tools, light carpentry, and gardening/landscaping techniques.

Experience with troubleshooting in the field.

Bachelor’s degree in ecology, evolutionary biology, botany, or a related field.

Ability to work outdoors in challenging conditions for long days.

Previous experience with field research in ecology, evolution, and/or botany.

Attention to detail; precise, neat work; ability to perform repetitive tasks.

Excellent problem‑solving and communication skills.

Physical Demands Engage in field research all day, sitting and standing for extended periods. Collecting data, troubleshooting and fixing equipment, occasional lifting of heavy materials and supplies (up to 50 pounds). Driving as needed for job duties. This is a position that requires driving.
