Pay Range $64,797.00/yr – $101,912.00/yr

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VA policy and submit the application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amounts are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the application.

Qualifications Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.

Education: Master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Doctoral degree in social work does not substitute for the master’s degree.

Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations: Social worker – GS‑9 experience and education.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work with veterans and families from diverse backgrounds; assess psychosocial functioning; develop treatment plans; implement treatment modalities; establish effective relationships; maintain independent license; knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses.

Preferred Experience: Individual, couples/family, and group therapy; consultation to other programs; familiarity with DSM‑5 and evidence‑based treatments.

Duties

Serve as a social worker on the acute inpatient psychiatric unit, providing psychosocial services to veterans experiencing acute mental health crises.

Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

Play a critical role in discharge planning and ensure veterans are connected to VA and community‑based services.

Provide crisis intervention and conduct risk assessments related to suicide and self‑harm.

Advocate for veterans, help navigate the VA system, access benefits, and overcome barriers to care.

Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and treatment planning discussions.

Provide individual, family, and group counseling and support on community resources, advance directives, and VA benefits.

Perform case management and wellness and prevention education.

Maintain comprehensive documentation in patient clinical records.

Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm.

Incentives: Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) authorized. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply for incentives.
