Position Overview The Career Consultant provides career education and advising to help students and alumni explore and achieve their career goals. They teach career/major exploration courses, deliver presentations and workshops, and provide individual career advising. The Consultant connects Career Services with the college(s) and students they are assigned to, collaborating with faculty, staff, and administrators to identify student career development needs and design effective services. Service delivery may include one‑on‑one appointments, teaching decision‑making classes, conducting class presentations and workshops, supervising peer intern advisors, and assisting with professional development and networking events.
Within Career Services, the Consultant works as part of the Career Advising Team (CAT), providing general career education and advising during drop‑in hours and at Career Services—sponsored events.
Required Experience
Experience composing and editing business documents
One year advising, mentoring, or supervising secondary or post‑secondary students
Experience speaking publicly to individuals and small and large groups
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree
Required Other
Individual positions will be required to obtain and maintain professional memberships and certifications as assigned and as budget allows
Ability to travel
Ability to work non‑standard business hours
Preferred Education
Master’s degree in Communication, English, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Adult Education, Business Education, Human Resources, Career and Technical Education, or related fields
Preferred Experience
Professional work experience in career counseling, advising/mentoring, student development, or career education, or in industries relevant to the college assignment
Past participation in experiential learning activities such as internships, co‑ops, service projects, national service programs, study abroad, research, national exchanges, or student leadership activities
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and experience using career recruitment databases and online career information systems (e.g., Handshake, Symplicity, CSO/Career Ladders, O*NET, Idaho CIS, EMSI)
Knowledge and experience using job boards and social media for professional networking and job searches
Ability to work effectively both on a team and independently
Strong written and verbal communication skills
