Position Summary This is a highly responsible avian technician position based out of the Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL). The incumbent is responsible for assisting a current University of Georgia PhD student and full-time technician with avian field research on location at the Augusta Regional Airport. There will also be occasional travel to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
The technician will be assisting with the capture, trapping, and handling of various raptor, vulture, and wading bird species for GPS unit attachment. The technician may also assist with avian point count surveys on airport property. Responsibilities can also include performing routine maintenance for research equipment and helping with other research-related activities as requested. This position is for approximately 8 months.
Duties/Responsibilities
Trapping and telemetry attachment on avian species (70%)
Assistance with point count surveys (20%)
Routine trap maintenance (5%)
Data entry
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification
Avian mist-netting, trapping, and banding experience are highly desirable.
Great organization and communication skills.
Uphold ethical standards of data collection.
Identification of southeastern bird species.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
Assists with field research related to the investigation of avian flight behavior in study species at southeastern airports.
Careful and accurate data collection/entry/management – detail oriented is a necessity.
Assists graduate student and advisor with ongoing research involving animal-aircraft collisions.
Provide assistance as needed with capture, trapping, and processing of avian species.
Physical Demands Lift at least 50 pounds and work outdoors 8 hours a day.
