Request to Recruit Position Title University Registrar | Location Boone, North Carolina | Faculty Rank No Provide Rank N/A | Position Number 001281 | Department Registrar - 240200 | Position Summary Information Primary Purpose Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of University Registrar, a strategic, detail-oriented leader focused on advancing student enrollment success through innovative practices, streamlined processes, and student-centered service. This position plays a critical role in supporting the University’s mission of access and excellence by overseeing all functions of the Office of the Registrar while collaborating across divisions to eliminate barriers to student enrollment and progression. Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Educational Leadership, or a related field. Minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in a Registrar’s Office or related enrollment management function. Demonstrated expertise in interpreting and applying academic policies and regulations. Proven ability to manage complex systems, lead teams, and drive institutional improvement through the substantial oversight and strategic management of core academic operations, including course registration, academic calendar management, and graduation certification. Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Ellucian Banner or similar student information systems. Understanding of tools supporting student records, degree auditing, and admissions processes, such as DegreeWorks and SLATE. Familiarity with state and federal compliance related to student records (e.g., FERPA). Strong understanding of current and emerging trends in enrollment management and student success. Demonstrated success in leveraging technology and data for strategic planning and operational improvement. Proven ability to interpret complex policies for diverse campus audiences (students, faculty, executive leadership). Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision: Provide visionary, forward-thinking leadership for the Office of the Registrar. Supervise and mentor a team of professional staff, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and service excellence. Promote professional development and encourage continuous improvement among Registrar staff. Enrollment Success & Student Support: Champion initiatives aimed at enhancing student enrollment, retention, and timely graduation. Collaborate with academic departments, student services, and other units to identify and remove institutional barriers to student success. Ensure student-centered processes that are equitable, accessible, and supportive of diverse learners. Supervise the accurate and timely generation of critical academic reports related to academic standing to support institutional retention efforts and ensure adherence to academic requirements. Policy Interpretation & Communication: Serve as the chief steward and interpreter of academic policies related to enrollment, records, grading, degree completion, and registration. Lead the Office of the Registrar’s collaboration with Academic Policies and Procedures Committees to manage the comprehensive, annual revision of the official University Bulletin. Provide clear, accurate, and timely communication to students, faculty, and staff regarding policies and procedures. Act as a liaison between the Registrar’s Office and various campus stakeholders to align policy with practice. Academic Records, Compliance, & Systems Oversight: Oversee the unit’s commitment to maintaining the security, integrity, and compliance of student records, including FERPA, grading, academic standing, and degree progression. Manage and guide the Registrar team’s execution of key academic processes and systems, including degree audits, graduation certification, course scheduling, registration, and technology platforms. Direct the planning and administration of the academic calendar, ensuring the team effectively manages all deadlines and time-sensitive processes. Drive the technological improvement and optimization of registration platforms, course scheduling systems, and related administrative systems. Institutional Data & Technology: Lead data-informed decision-making through effective use of student information systems and analytics. Identify and implement innovative technologies to improve accuracy, efficiency, and access to academic records and enrollment services. Coordinate with the Office of Institutional Research and Planning as the primary data steward to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timely sharing of student statistical data. Strategic Enrollment Management: Partner with enrollment management leadership and other campus leaders to support enrollment planning and forecasting. Analyze trends and provide actionable insights to inform enrollment strategies and academic planning. Represent the Registrar’s Office in institutional committees and initiatives related to student success and enrollment growth. Applicant Documents
