Required Education: Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student in a related field (e.g., Horticulture, Plant & Soil Sciences, Biology, or Agriculture).
Required Related Experience: Interest in and/or prior experience working with plants, horticultural crops, or biological sciences.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry plant materials (up to ~25 lbs); Standing, walking, and bending for extended periods during greenhouse may be required. Shift: Work will be scheduled during business hours; Weekdays 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
Job Summary The Department of Horticulture is seeking a motivated Undergraduate Research Assistant for a project running from November 2025 through December 2026. This position offers hands‑on training in horticultural genetics, genomics, and germplasm characterization, providing valuable experience in both laboratory and greenhouse/field environments. The student will contribute to ongoing crop improvement projects while building technical and analytical skills relevant to plant science careers and graduate study.
Responsibilities
Collect and prepare plant tissue samples for DNA extraction and genetic analysis.
Perform DNA extractions and assist with genotyping and molecular characterization experiments.
Maintain accurate labeling, documentation, and storage of samples and experimental data.
Support greenhouse and field activities such as fruit harvest, seed extraction, cleaning, and inventory management.
Enter, organize, and conduct preliminary analysis of research data.
Collaborate with project staff and faculty while adhering to laboratory and field safety protocols.
This position is ideal for students interested in plant biology, genetics, biotechnology, or agricultural research, and offers an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful research experience in a supportive academic setting.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records. Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting, sample preparation) is a plus. Interest in genetics, genomics, and crop improvement. Willingness to learn new skills and work as part of a collaborative research team. Basic computer skills for data entry and organization. Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? No
Preferred Education/Experience Ability to work in both laboratory and greenhouse environments.
