About Us
The Next Step is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides tuition assistance to individuals active in a 12-step recovery program from substance use disorder who demonstrate financial need and are pursuing an academic or vocational education.
Position Description The Community Engagement and Events Coordinator is a highly outgoing, organized, and mission-driven team member who plays a central role in planning and executing events, coordinating volunteers, and supporting donor engagement.
This role requires strong communication skills, comfort interacting with students, donors, and community members, and the ability to support leadership with fundraising tasks, event planning, and administrative work. Hours vary seasonally, with increased workloads during major events.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Work experience with a small to mid-size non-profit organization preferred
Knowledge of 12-step substance use disorder recovery programs (A.A., N.A., H.A, C.M.A)
Extremely outgoing, personable, and comfortable being highly visible at events. Must have a very high comfort level of working with people from a wide range of backgrounds in a professional, approachable manner.
Experience with the following software or their equivalent is preferred: Canva, DropBox, Zoom, Calendly, Microsoft Office, Bloomerang, and GiveSmart
Strong organization and planning skills, ability to work independently, with high attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness in all work.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities Event Coordination
Coordinate community events, scholarship interviews, student volunteer opportunities, donor meetings, and fundraising events
Serve as the primary point of contact during events for guests, vendors, and partners
Event assistant during the annual fundraising Gala
Travel to Kansas City twice per year for events.
Join evening Zoom sessions for KC-based programming and meetings as needed.
Volunteer Coordination
Coordinate student volunteer events and sign-ups
Maintain volunteer records, communication, and follow-up.
Create a welcoming experience for all student and community volunteers
Donor and Fundraising Support
Manage donor communications in Bloomerang CRM
Donor acknowledgment emails, thank you letters, and phone calls
Produce reports, track engagement, and maintain accurate records
Coordinate and attend donor meetings
Marketing and Communications
Create social media content
Post and monitor organization social media channels to highlight events, supporters, and impact.
Collaborate on messaging and branding for digital and print materials.
Work Environment & Requirements
Part-time, 20 hours per week. The position will typically be Monday-Friday, but evenings and weekends are required several times per year. Additional hours will be required during peak scholarship and fundraising periods.
Hybrid position including office hours on location in Warson Woods and on-site events
Attend one Zoom board meeting per month on a Saturday morning
Reliable transportation, ability to move up and down stairwells, and to lift approximately 25 lbs for event setup
Occasional travel to Kansas City, Missouri
