Social Worker – Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program Organization:

Pay Range $67,402.00/yr – $106,010.00/yr (based on experience and qualifications)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligible applicants must meet VHA policy requirements and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount may be up to $200,000 and the eligibility period ranges from one to five years.

Qualifications

Must be a U.S. citizen; non‑citizens only if no qualified U.S. citizens are available.

Proficient in spoken and written English.

Master's degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited school. (Graduates of schools in candidacy status do not qualify until accreditation.)

Doctoral degree cannot substitute for the master's degree.

Licensed or certified by a state to practice social work at the master’s level. State licensing requirements may be waived for GS‑9 appointments pending completion of prerequisite testing; for GS‑11 and above, licensure is required.

Experience: Minimum of one year post‑MSW in a health care or related social work setting for GS‑11; GS‑9 may not require professional experience but will consider educational and clinical background.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the role include counseling, psychosocial assessment, treatment planning, crisis intervention, relationship management, medical terminology, and coordination with community resources.

Preferred: Advanced practice social worker license and evidence‑based psychotherapy experience in an outpatient setting.

Duties

Develop psychosocial assessments in collaboration with interdisciplinary treatment teams and Veteran families.

Formulate and implement individualized treatment plans addressing mental and emotional disorders with evidence‑based modalities (e.g., ACT, CBT, CPT, PE).

Provide individual, family, and group psychotherapy while maintaining professional ethics per NASW code.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary staff to set treatment goals, facilitate discharge planning, and coordinate community referrals.

Document clinical progress and assist in program evaluation and peer review activities.

Maintain up‑to‑date clinical documentation per facility timelines.

Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rates may be granted for unique qualifications.

Paid time off: 37‑50 days annually (13‑26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays).

Parental leave: up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months employment.

Child‑care subsidy for eligible employees after 60 days employment (up to 25% of costs).

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% employer match.

Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care insurance; telework not available.
