Location: Starbuck, Washington – Lyons Ferry Hatchery, Columbia County

Duration: 3 months (February 2, 2026 – April 30, 2026)

Classification: Fish Hatchery Technician

Job Summary:

Assist in maintaining hatchery facilities and equipment, support fish culture activities, and ensure safe and efficient operations within the WDFW Hatchery Division.

Key Responsibilities:

Feed fish and dispense daily ration.

Monitor fish behavior and health; record daily data on facility and complex forms.

Collect and dispose of mortalities; maintain raceways and ponds.

Participate in fish sampling, population counts, mortalities removal, and equipment sterilization.

Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution.

Perform fish inventories, grading, marking, and weight sampling.

Maintain water flow and rearing environments; monitor facility support systems.

Organize hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds.

Respond to visitor inquiries and communicate with the public professionally.

Follow safety protocols and maintain accurate records.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED equivalency.

Valid driver’s license.

Basic fish culture knowledge and rearing procedures.

Basic computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Excel.

Experience with water dynamics and instrument calibration (e.g., scales, Dissolved Oxygen meters).

Basic math skills for calculating quantities and proportions.

Ability to perform repetitive lifting of at least 50 lbs.

Capacity to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two‑ or four‑year degree in Fisheries or a related field.

Experience working in a hatchery setting.

Experience maintaining tools and equipment.
