ob Summary: The Heavy Equipment Operator in the Wastewater Division is responsible for operating a variety of construction and maintenance equipment used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sanitary sewer and wastewater infrastructure. This includes excavators, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, and related machinery. The Operator must ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local, state, and federal standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Safely operate heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, and compact trenches for sewer pipe installation or repair.

Support pipe crews during wastewater pipeline construction, manhole installation, lift station upgrades, and related work.

Load, transport, and stage materials or spoils as required for the project.

Perform pre‑ and post‑operation inspections on all equipment; report maintenance needs or safety issues promptly.

Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, and utility locates to avoid damage to existing infrastructure.

Assist with trench shoring, confined space entry setups, and bypass pumping preparations as needed.

Work closely with wastewater technicians, utility locators, and other crew members to maintain project flow.

Maintain clean and organized work areas and adhere to all environmental regulations and safety practices.

Participate in daily safety meetings and job hazard assessments.

Occasionally assist with manual labor tasks when equipment is not in use.

Qualifications:

Experience:

2+ years operating heavy equipment, preferably in underground utility or wastewater‑related work.

Skills and Knowledge:

Knowledge of safe excavation practices around live utilities.

Ability to operate equipment with precision in tight or hazardous spaces.

Understanding of grades, slopes, and trench safety standards.

Familiarity with wastewater systems, including gravity and force mains, is a plus.

Team‑oriented with good communication and situational awareness.

Certifications/Licenses:

Valid driver's license required; CDL Class A or B preferred.

OSHA 10 or 30‑hour certification preferred.

Competent Person certification for excavation safety is a plus.

Equipment operator certification or training credentials desirable.

Working Conditions:

Outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Physically demanding: lifting, climbing in and out of machinery, standing for long periods.

Exposure to raw sewage, confined spaces, noise, and traffic.

Must be available for emergency or after‑hours work, including on‑call rotations.
