Substance Abuse Counselor / Substance Use Team The role of the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor on the SUD team is to provide direct care and support to substance use patients on the acute care units (med‑surg and mother‑baby) throughout their inpatient stay. Responsibilities include conducting an initial assessment, coordinating treatment planning and case management, offering educational/group therapy, discussing harm‑reduction models, providing education on medication‑assisted treatment (MAT) options, completing a thorough medical chart review, and assisting with care recommendations. The counselor collaborates as part of a multidisciplinary team, applying strengths‑based and trauma‑informed approaches to help patients and families increase coping skills and prepare for discharge. The counselor also collects collateral information to aid in diagnosis, monitors patient access to treatment, addresses barriers, educates staff on SUD care, and participates in task‑force meetings, grand rounds, and other educational presentations.

Qualifications

Two years of experience in the substance abuse field, preferably in an inpatient setting.

Bachelor’s degree in counseling or a related human services field is preferred.

A license demonstrates competency: CADCL‑CADC or LADC I/II within 12 months of hire (in MA) or a Bachelor’s degree in Health & Human Services.

CPR certification required within 3 months of hire.
