Qualifications

Knowledge and background in the sport of swimming.

Meets RSU 57 eligibility requirements, including:

First Aid Certification

CPR Certification

Concussion Management Course

Heat Acclimatization Course

RSU 57 Background Check

Maine Department of Education Criminal History Record Check

All requirements must be met within timelines specified by RSU 57.

Position Summary The Assistant Swim Coach instructs student-athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary to achieve individual and team success. The Assistant Coach supports and works collaboratively with the Head Swim Coach in all aspects of the middle school swim program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist the Head Swim Coach in organizing and supervising all aspects of the middle school swim program.

Demonstrate knowledge of and comply with all RSU 57, school, and MPA policies and procedures.

Implement and enforce athletic policies and team rules as required.

Attend all required meetings as scheduled by the school, Athletic Director, and MPA.

Emphasize the importance of academics, sportsmanship, citizenship, and character development consistent with RSU 57 athletic philosophy.

Maintain high standards for athlete performance, behavior, and conduct.

Model appropriate conduct, professionalism, and sportsmanship at all times.

Dress appropriately for practices, competitions, and meetings.

Apply knowledge of swimming techniques, training methods, and conditioning principles.

Seek opportunities for professional growth and implement new strategies and techniques when appropriate.

Teach skills that are developmentally appropriate, age-appropriate, and safe for each athlete.

Supervise student-athletes at all times to ensure safety and accountability.

Assist with inventory, care, storage, and maintenance of equipment and uniforms.

Inspect facilities and equipment regularly to ensure safe conditions.

Assist in preparation and supervision of all scheduled practices and competitions.

Support the Head Coach in establishing and enforcing team expectations and rules.

Utilize appropriate emergency procedures and injury response protocols.

Encourage leadership, teamwork, and positive behavior among student-athletes on and off the pool deck.

Communicate promptly, professionally, and appropriately with parents and guardians.

Participate in preseason meetings with athletes and parents/guardians.

Interact respectfully and appropriately with officials, opponents, and event personnel.

Complete all required paperwork accurately and by established deadlines.

Maintain required records and documentation for student-athletes.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal.

Language and Communication Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents relevant to the position, including athletic policies, handbooks, and state guidelines.

Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and correctly in both oral and written form with parents, athletes, coaches, and administrators.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, coaching staff, athletes, parents, and the community.

Mathematical Skills

Basic understanding of budgeting, inventory, and record-keeping practices.

Physical Demands While performing the essential duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear. The position frequently requires physical demonstration of skills, including running, jumping, throwing, catching, and general body movement. The employee may be required to lift and carry items weighing more than 20 pounds. Occasional prolonged sitting and frequent travel by bus are required. Extended hours may be necessary to meet the demands of the position.

Work Environment The work environment noise level is usually moderate but may occasionally be excessive. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions.
