2-4 Year IP Litigation Associate – Patent & Trade Secret Focus | Chicago, IL Join a distinguished intellectual‑property practice in Chicago as a 2‑ to 4‑year associate with an Electrical Engineering background.

You will handle sophisticated patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation matters for innovative clients across electronics, telecommunications, software, and related technologies.

Base Pay Range $235,000.00 – $310,000.00 per year

Key Responsibilities

Engage in intellectual property litigation focused on patent infringement involving electrical engineering technologies, electronics, telecommunications, and software.

Handle trade‑secret misappropriation matters, including theft of confidential information, unfair competition, and breach of non‑compete agreements.

Conduct thorough legal research on complex patent law issues, claim construction, infringement analysis, and invalidity defenses.

Draft persuasive legal documents, including complaints, answers, motions for summary judgment, claim‑construction briefs, and expert discovery materials.

Collaborate with a team of attorneys to develop case strategies, coordinate discovery, and prepare for depositions and trial.

Represent clients in federal district court litigation, ITC investigations, and alternative dispute resolution.

Manage discovery processes, including document production, technical document review, and coordination with forensic experts.

Work with technical experts (engineers, scientists, patent agents) to understand complex technologies and develop litigation strategies.

Take and defend depositions of fact witnesses, inventors, and technical experts.

Participate in claim‑construction hearings (Markman) and prepare detailed technical presentations.

Engage in settlement negotiations with opposing counsel to achieve favorable outcomes.

Provide strategic counsel to clients on patent portfolio management, freedom‑to‑operate analyses, and litigation risk assessment.

Conduct patent invalidity and non‑infringement analyses using technical expertise to evaluate prior art and claim scope.

Support business development efforts, including client presentations, technical seminars, and industry networking.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA‑accredited law school with excellent academic credentials.

Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering (required) with a strong technical foundation.

2‑4 years of experience in intellectual property law, focusing on patent litigation and/or trade‑secret matters.

Admission to the Illinois State Bar in good standing (required).

Strong legal research, writing, and advocacy skills with proven ability to draft persuasive briefs and legal memoranda.

Excellent analytical abilities to translate complex technical concepts into compelling legal arguments.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a fast‑paced litigation team.

Superior written and oral communication skills and confidence presenting technical arguments to judges, juries, and clients.

Entrepreneurial drive and proactive approach to case management and client service.

Experience with federal court patent litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation.

Familiarity with Patent Office proceedings (IPR, PGR, or ex parte reexamination) is a plus.

Technical expertise in electrical engineering fields such as semiconductors, telecommunications, computer hardware/software, signal processing, or consumer electronics.

Proficiency with technical tools for patent analysis and prior‑art searching.
