About the Position Full‑time Utilities Maintenance Mechanic in the Wastewater Department of the City of La Crosse.

The role supports the city’s mission to protect public health and the environment by maintaining and repairing wastewater equipment and ensuring the plant’s efficient operation.

Responsibilities

Inspect, maintain, and repair a wide range of wastewater equipment, including sludge pumps, mixers, motors, comminuters, de‑gritting units, clarifier drives, blowers, aeration stones, and chemical feed systems.

Perform preventive maintenance, electrical, plumbing, carpentry work, and metal fabrication as needed.

Operate pumps, control water flow, and manage valves; record readings and maintain chemical treatment logs.

Assist with scheduled and emergency repairs and plant operations; respond to on‑call duties and emergencies.

Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records, order parts and supplies, and adhere to safety and environmental protocols.

Provide guidance and instruction to coworkers and contractors on equipment handling and safety procedures.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; 2‑3 years of mechanical maintenance experience in a utility setting, or a comparable combination of education and experience.

Valid Class A commercial driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 30 days).

Current CPR, First Aid, and confined‑space entry certifications.

Capability to apply mechanical skill, mathematics, judgment, and safe‑work practices to complex equipment operation.
