Job Summary The
Sterile Processing Technician
is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies. The technician ensures all instruments and supplies are properly processed and available for patient care in accordance with established procedures and infection control standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clean, decontaminate, and sterilize surgical instruments and medical equipment using autoclaves and other sterilization methods.
Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and damage; report or replace defective items.
Assemble instrument trays and surgical sets according to procedural requirements.
Maintain accurate inventory of sterile and non-sterile supplies.
Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols and regulatory standards.
Monitor sterilization indicators and document sterilization cycles and loads.
Handle and store sterile items in compliance with hospital policies.
Collaborate with surgical and nursing staff to meet surgical case needs and turnaround times.
Participate in departmental quality assurance and continuing education programs.
Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Certification:
CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) through HSPA or CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) through CBSPD preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 2 year of recent sterile processing experience in a hospital or surgical center preferred.
Skills
Knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control, and surgical instrumentation.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.
