J.B. Hunt is hiring tractor-trailer mechanics for openings in our Portland location! Join our team of talented diesel mechanics and you’ll work with the latest technology, tools and diagnostics to keep our modern fleet of trucks and equipment moving!
You’ll perform maintenance, service and repair to J.B. Hunt trailers, containers, chassis and other equipment at a customer location or the rail yard. This is
not
a roadside assistance role.
The hourly range on this position is $25.81-$37.37, depending on experience. We are also offering a $3,000 sign‑on bonus!
Perform complex diagnostics, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, tire replacements/flat repairs, brake repairs, electrical diagnostics, and basic structural repairs on tractor and trailer equipment
Oversee recall campaigns and sign off on completion
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair ABS system and specialized equipment including refrigerated units, lift gates, and frame alignment
May onboard and mentor new technician trainees; act as team lead to coordinate shift support and tasks
Follow all safety requirements while at a customer or rail yard
Professionally operate assigned service truck and according to company requirements; properly attend to service truck parts inventory
Accurately complete work orders and other written materials according to established procedures
Properly document damage to company equipment to estimate the cost of repairs
Demonstrate proficient use of a cutting torch and welding equipment to perform mid‑level repairs on chassis, frames, and other equipment
Patch holes in trailer/container side panels and roofs ensuring all holes are sealed and water‑tight
Perform annual AA Trailer and FHWA Brake Inspections sign‑off

Minimum Qualifications
18 years of age and 3 years of experience in semi‑tractor or semi‑trailer maintenance and repair, or equivalent combination of education and experience, and/or military equivalent experience
DOT‑certified in FHWA inspections and air brakes
Possess a clean motor vehicle record per J.B. Hunt guidelines
Able to supply your own basic tools or purchase through our toolbox purchase program
Willingness to work outdoors in the elements
Able to work across multiple shifts, including nights and/or weekends, if needed
Preferred Qualifications
Welding certification
Forklift certification and experience
EPA section 608 certification and Refrigeration License
Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to fulfill physical requirements (lift/move appliance up to 50 pounds)
Ability to wear appropriate work attire (protective gear/PPE)
