Tax Manager, Core Tax Services

is responsible for advising clients on tax implications, selecting alternative actions to reduce tax burden, ensuring compliance, and serving as the primary contact for complex tax issues. The manager also participates in marketing, networking, and business development, and may provide written tax advice to clients.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
Ensure client and firm compliance with tax authorities and BDO’s Tax Quality Manual.
Conduct top‑level reviews of tax returns and resolve issues, involving specialists when necessary.
Communicate findings to clients and Assurance.
Plan and review the tax process, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement time, billing, and collections.
Manage client expectations and provide timely advice.
Research
Identify when research is needed, frame issues, and report analysis.
Apply firm and professional standards for WTA and tax returns; involve specialists as appropriate.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 & FIN 48)
Apply ASC 740 policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
Explain income‑tax provision components and uncertain tax positions to clients.
Coordinate with Assurance counterparts for accrual reviews.
Utilize and manage STE tools.
Tax Consulting
Recommend and implement tax‑minimizing strategies.
Assess applicability of CTS and STS specialties.
Develop and oversee work plans, provide technical support, and assist with examination.
Delegate tasks efficiently.
Tax Specialization
Develop deep expertise in selected tax areas (individual, corporate, state/local, international, transfer pricing, etc.).
Possibly lead internal CPE training.
Strategy Development
Propose ideas to benefit clients and the firm.
Review studies, suggest alternatives, and share lessons learned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise and review associates and senior associates.
Train on software tools and career development.
Schedule and manage workload; provide performance feedback.
Requirements
Education
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or statistics (required).
Master’s in accountancy or taxation (preferred).
Experience
5+ years of relevant tax experience in public or private accounting, consulting, or professional services (required).
Prior supervisory experience (required).
Industry expertise in at least one tax specialty (preferred).
License / Certification
Certified Public Accountant, admitted attorney, or IRS Enrolled Agent (required).
Other relevant professional degrees or certifications (preferred).
Software
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (preferred).
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software (preferred).
Skills & Abilities
Superior verbal and written communication.
Strong analytical, research, and critical‑thinking skills.
Ability to delegate and manage a team.
Executive presence and client‑facing proficiency.
Capability to produce written tax advice.
Language
