Payroll Specialist – responsible for payroll accounting and administrative duties to support the Payroll and Human Resources department. They ensure payment is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations for both salaried and hourly employees. They also comply with all state and federal regulations pertaining to timekeeping, tax payments, and any garnishments or levies. They assist the Payroll Manager and other team members in all levels of payroll/HR‑related tasks to provide the best customer service to the employees and management.

Location: Hawthorne, CA. Salary: $80,000.00–$115,000.00 (annual).

Key Responsibilities

Ensure accuracy and timeliness of the bi‑weekly payroll for 2,000+ employees.

Review timecards, compute wages, reconcile wages, overtime, and other types of pay with accuracy and compliance.

Assist in maintaining employee records and adhere to all state and federal laws.

Post, update, and reconcile all employee‑related payroll deductions (garnishments, tax levies, child support orders, etc.).

Resolve any issues/questions from supervisors or other parties in a timely and professional manner.

Assist in other departments within the organization as needed, being flexible and adaptable.

Maintain the highest standards of accuracy, precision, discretion, and confidentiality.

Commit to the successful achievement of team and organizational goals through collaborative teamwork.

Perform work under direct supervision, handling basic issues and referring complex issues to higher‑level staff.

Be diligent, punctual, and ready to work.

Perform other duties as needed in support of assigned business objectives.

Technical Skills & Abilities

Proficiency in payroll software such as ADP, Paycom, or UKG and Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, data validation).

Strong understanding of payroll laws and regulations, including wage and hour laws, tax withholdings, and compliance reporting.

Ability to process and review time‑keeping data, deductions, garnishments, and benefits accurately.

Experience generating and analyzing payroll reports for auditing and reconciliation purposes.

Familiarity with general ledger posting and understanding payroll’s impact on financial statements.

Knowledge of multi‑state payroll processing, including varying state and local tax requirements.

Effective communication and organizational skills.

Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.

Computer literate in Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Excel.

Respectful, honest, and demonstrates a strong work ethic.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred but not required.

Minimum 1–2 years of experience processing payroll.

Experience in the legal cannabis market preferred but not required.

Requirements

At least 21 years of age.

Able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 15 lbs. to a minimum height of 5 feet and carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.

Prolonged periods of standing, sitting at a desk, and working on a computer.

Ability to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.

Ability to get in and out of a vehicle and walk up and down stairs during shift.

Ability to stand, sit for prolonged periods, bend, kneel, squat, and twist.
