Job Summary
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs a variety of complex imaging and non-imaging tests on patients of all ages, requiring professional judgment and interaction with patients, physicians, and other allied health care professionals. He/she is able to work independently although technical supervision assistance is always available. Knowledge of Nuclear Medicine, Positron Imaging, radiation safety and the ability to evaluate the results along with the ability to determine the need for concomitant or additional studies is required.
Responsibilities
Dose Calculation and Administration:
Correctly makes modifications of radionuclide and pharmaceutical doses, performs manual decay and concentration formulas, and prepares and administers appropriate dosages of radiopharmaceuticals. Promptly and accurately enters all radiopharmaceutical data into logbooks and maintains pharmacy records.
Imaging Procedures:
Establishes correct patient identification, order verification and diagnosis appropriateness. Records patient history, labs and other correlating imaging results. Educates patients, answers questions and promotes cooperation. Acquires necessary views and processes planar, 2D, or 3D data and performs other medical imaging procedures as requested.
Operates Imaging Equipment:
Performs quality control procedures on instruments, calibrates monitoring devices, records maintenance logs, reports problems, and adjusts study parameters for specific indications and patient sizes.
Radiation Protection:
Receives and checks radionuclide shipments, tracks disposal of radioactive materials, monitors personnel and work areas, reports excessive exposure and follows radiation safety regulations and procedures during spills.
Other Responsibilities and Performance Standards:
Orders supplies as needed, maintains a clean work area, ensures the lab is supplied and operational before examinations, maintains patient satisfaction scores above 90%, completes required in‑service training on schedule, attends at least 50% staff meetings, maintains required certification, and completes authorization for radiopharmaceutical administrations within probationary employment.
Education Successful completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology training program.
Certification & Licensures
ARRT (N) or NMTCB certification as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) required.
Qualifications Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development and competence in providing Nuclear Medicine services for patients of all ages, including neonatal through geriatric.
Work Function / Activity Light to Medium Physical Demand (20–50 lbs). Frequent hand washing, standing, walking, occasional sitting, bending, squatting, crouching, kneeling, pulling, pushing, stretching, reaching, climbing, twisting, and lifting. Requires visual acuity to see details at distance and close range, and good hearing to focus on auditory information.
