Electrical Inspector II positions enforce regulations and inspect electrical and fire alarm installations in multi-family residential, commercial and industrial structures for compliance with local, state and federal electrical and other applicable construction codes and regulations. Duties include: inspect signs and electrical installations for temporary or special events; investigate and resolve complaints of code violations; check electrical plans for compliance; enforce field compliance with approved plans; interpret department policies and regulations; maintain records; prepare reports and correction notices; meet with property owners, tenants, contractors, builders and engineers to discuss correction notices and provide technical advice; review construction, replacement, installation and repair plans and calculations; inspect sites for practicability of plans; assist with training schedules and assignments; and perform other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education Requirements

Two years of full-time experience performing electrical or fire alarm inspections with a governmental jurisdiction at a level equivalent to an Electrical Inspector I with the City of San Diego.

In addition to the above experience, meet one of the following options:

One year of full-time experience performing general electrical or fire alarm work and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Two years of full-time experience with a governmental jurisdiction or a private company contracting with a governmental jurisdiction performing electrical or fire alarm inspections of residential and/or commercial structures.

One year of full-time experience with a governmental jurisdiction or a private company contracting with a governmental jurisdiction performing electrical or fire alarm inspections of residential and/or commercial structures and an Associate’s Degree or Community College Certificate in Construction Inspection or Building Construction Technology (Inspection or Electrical option).

Four years of full-time experience performing all phases of journey-level electrical or fire alarm work.

One year of full-time experience performing all phases of journey-level electrical or fire alarm work and completion of a state-accredited five-year Electrical Apprenticeship Program.

Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience equals 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.

Possession of a contractor’s license is NOT a substitute for a college degree or certificate.

City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

Certification and License Requirements

Valid International Code Council (ICC) or International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) Commercial Electrical Inspector Certificate within two years from the date of hire.

Valid California Class C Driver License at the time of hire.

Required to provide own vehicle; mileage will be reimbursed.

Highly Desirable

Experience performing fire alarm inspections or installation.

Notes

Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10 2021 will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).

Electrical Inspector II employees will be required to perform job-related work in high-rise structures.
