Job Description And Duties Under the direction of a Supervising Bridge Engineer, the incumbent serves as a technical specialist for OEEAR in DES. Responsibilities include:

Developing and implementing Caltrans seismic strategies, policies, and guidance materials.

Providing technical oversight on seismic criteria and seismic design for important or unusual bridge projects.

Developing research problem statements and managing Caltrans research projects.

Supporting OEEAR staff in identifying and prioritizing bridges for seismic risk.

Applicants must meet the Senior Bridge Engineer exam eligibility criteria. Current and new to state civil services candidates must be on the state examination list.

Special Requirements

Valid Professional Engineer license issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Valid driver’s license when operating state owned or leased vehicles.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) SOQ required. Must be typed, no more than 2 pages, single‑spaced, using 12‑point font.

SOQ must address the following:

Demonstrated ability to work as a collaborative and productive member of a technical engineering team in bridge design, research, construction, or maintenance projects.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with refined analyses of bridge structures and Caltrans structural design methods, details, standards, procedures, and policies.

Demonstrated ability to articulate bridge seismic performance principles and experience with Caltrans seismic design policy and guidance, including screening bridges for seismic vulnerabilities and developing retrofit strategies.

Demonstrated experience with specialized seismic engineering practices (e.g., seismic response modification devices, seismic risks, foundations, complex and unusual structures, or advanced analyses).
