Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches. Use drawings and specifications to plan welding operations. Ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes and standards. Must be able to understand and interpret welding symbols IAW MIL-STD 22D. Provide skilled welding on steel and aluminum plate, shapes, and CS/CuNi/NiCu/SS pipe in the repair or alteration of vessels and associated equipment. Locate and mark reference lines such as center, buttock, and frame lines. Fabricate templates for bending, shaping, and bracing metal structures. Set up and use portable burning/heating torches and plasma cutters. Work well with others in a team environment. Mentor junior welders in drawing interpretation, joint design requirements, specific welding techniques (mirror welding) and processes. Oversee the progression of junior welder workmanship inspectors. Learn documentation of fit‑up, welds and workmanship inspections. Comply with OSHA, shipyard safety, and environmental policies and procedures. May be required to travel to jobsites away from the shipyard and utilize a company vehicle. May be required to work more than the standard work week, including weekends. Perform fire watch duties. Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. Trade school with 5+ years of experience in the field. Pass weld qualifications (2G, 3G, 4G) SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) and GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). Meet NAVSEA 248 requirements by passing MIL-STD 1689 T9074-AR-GIB-010-278 Weld Workmanship requirements. Desired Qualifications
Previous welding certification and experience with GMAW Aluminum and SMAW. Previous brazing experience. Previous TIG experience. Previous FCAW experience. Security Requirements
Eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance. Meet REAL‑ID requirements for base and travel access. Travel Requirements
Up to 50% travel nationwide, including international travel as needed. May travel to various local shipyards for work. Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate identification credentials, such as REAL‑ID, if travel by domestic flight or access to secure federal facilities/military bases is required. Physical Requirements
Lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes, typically no less than 20 lbs. Be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships, including climbing ladders, working in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. Perform other duties involving high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. Frequent exposure to noise from machinery and equipment. Operate trucks, forklifts, and man‑lifts. Operate hands, fingers, reach, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, crawl, stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear as required. Work in extreme temperatures and poorly ventilated areas at times.
