Summary The Mechanical Service Technician position will be responsible for examining various systems within a vehicle to diagnose and repair any issues. This entails running computerized diagnostic tests to help identify components that might be malfunctioning, interpreting Port Service Bulletins, performing mechanical inspections, running system diagnostics, and replacing/repairing defective components.

Responsibilities

Perform mechanical warranty diagnostics and repairs

Correct major repair problems and difficult diagnostic tasks.

Makes minor and major repairs to engines, chassis and appurtenances of mechanical equipment.

Makes repairs, adjustments or replacement of parts and directs other kinds of servicing and maintenance work required.

Determines the necessity for new parts and equipment, and makes requisitions.

Create bill of material (BOM), record labor time, and write detailed repair orders.

Troubleshoot fuel, ignition, and emissions control systems, using electronic testing equipment.

Repair, overhaul, or adjust automobile brake systems.

Test electronic computer components in automobiles to ensure proper operation.

Align wheels, axles, frames, torsion bars, and steering mechanisms of automobiles, using special alignment equipment and wheel‑balancing machines.

Tune automobile engines to ensure proper and efficient functioning.

Repair, replace, or adjust defective fuel injectors, carburetor parts, and gasoline filters.

Change spark plugs, fuel filters, air filters, and batteries in hybrid electric vehicles.

Replace defective mufflers and tailpipes.

Diagnose and replace or repair engine management systems or related sensors for flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) with ignition timing, fuel rate, alcohol concentration, or air‑to‑fuel ratio malfunctions.

Other duties as assigned.

Compensation $54,656 - $58,642/annually

Skills

Ability to read, write, follow written and verbal instructions (Required).

Ability to drive both automatic and straight shift vehicles (Required).

Ability to verify and record numbers 17 characters in length (Required).

Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment and to apply approved techniques in remedying defects (Required).

Ability to make road tests and other checks of the effectiveness of the repair (Required).

Ability to plan and direct work of subordinates, making efficient use of time, labor and materials (Required).

Education & Experience

Associates Degree Preferred.

3+ years of automotive repair experience Required.

National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence Certification (ASE) Required.

Valid and current Driver's License Required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Repetitive use of hand/grasping product, writing, and typing.

Lift, push, pull, carry up to 75 lbs.

Bend/stoop/kneel/squat/crouch.

Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Working & Environmental Conditions

Typical warehouse indoor/outdoor environment with exposure to vehicle exhaust, gas, paints, solvents, dust.

Typical outside environment based in a plant manufacturing/warehouse setting.

Must be comfortable working at heights (e.g., upper decks of rail cars).

Must be comfortable operating loading ramp.

Exposure to dust, fumes, and gases accumulated inside rail car.

The position is based in a plant manufacturing/warehousing environment at Port Hueneme, CA.

Communication with employees and field partners will be primarily conducted via phone and email.
