Description Of Work The Helene Mitigation Crew Lead will lead a crew with primary focus on invasive species management, fuel mitigation, prescribed burning, and wildfire control in Helene impacted areas. Responsibilities include supervising up to 10 crew members, maintaining equipment and spray apparatus, completing daily and weekly logs, and ensuring crew safety, navigation, and training.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities / Management Preferences Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP).

Note:

Permanent and time‑limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time‑limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.

Work Schedule

Standard work week will be Monday through Friday 08:00‑17:00 but may change frequently and on short notice.

Wildfire and disaster/emergency response requires year‑round readiness and may require extended working hours and days.

Work week is 40 hours with occasional overtime and weekend hours.

Require willingness to travel and stay overnight frequently.

May be subject to after‑hours callback during high fire danger and natural disasters.

Residency required within assigned work area and/or within 60 minutes of the Region 3 Office in Asheville NC or Morganton Forestry Center in Morganton NC.

Management Preferences

Working knowledge of firefighting methods, tactics, and practices.

Knowledge of fire weather, fire behavior, equipment capability, strategy, and tactics.

Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., chainsaw, ATV, drill torch, backpack sprayers, etc.).

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from colleagues.

Ability to evaluate inputs in a rapidly changing work environment and make decisions that affect field technicians and operational safety.

Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.

Ability and willingness to handle herbicides during vegetation management.

Ability to mix, handle, and apply herbicides in accordance with label and supervisor instructions.

Ability to develop timeframes and then complete tasks within timeframes.

Willingness to work with a wide range of people.

Ability to navigate to remote sites with maps, written directions, and GPS.

Ability to correctly identify invasive plants with minimal review, and to differentiate invasive plants from native vegetation of similar appearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supervising employees.

Minimum 2 years experience in wildfire prevention, mitigation, or invasive species management, knowledge of mitigation and treatment programs and recommendations, and certified burn boss qualification.

Training in Firewise USA, Ready Set GO, or other specialized wildland‑urban interface training.

Completion of Firefighter Training such as S‑130, S‑190, L‑180, Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service, or the NC Forest Service Basic Wildland Fire Suppression course.

Basic knowledge, training, or experience with the Incident Command System (including I‑100).

Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment.

Experience working with storm debris removal projects.

Sound knowledge of fuel mitigation principles as they relate to vegetation management.

Current knowledge of fuel mitigation methods.

Experience with wildland fire principles related to urban interface.

CPR certified and trained as a first responder.

Complexity / Problem Solving

May resolve natural resource management or personnel challenges independently as delegated.

Consult with supervisor to develop plans for the resolution of unusual or complex problems.

Monitor the progress of crew members toward achieving qualification goals.

Discretion / Latitude / Decision‑making

Consults supervisor on unusual or complex issues.

Make day‑to‑day decisions as delegated by supervisor.

May be called upon to make decisions about invasive control in the field based upon site conditions and available resources.

Responsibility / Oversight – Financial And Supervisory

Receive detailed instructions to complete required tasks.

May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision.

Oversee day‑to‑day operations of crew members.

Maintain personal fitness and fire readiness.

Minimum Education And Experience Associate’s degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum from an accredited institution and five years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license required within 90 days of hire.
