**This temporary position is with the NC Dept of Agriculture & Consumer Services - North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) located at 220 Sardis Road, Asheville NC in Buncombe County. (JO#30394)****Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $28.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).** The mission of the **North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS)** is to protect, manage, and promote forest resources for the citizens of North Carolina. The Mitigation Specialist provides wildfire mitigation program technical oversight and support to NCFS, cooperators, and to individuals in their assigned area. This includes assisting in all program delivery and support related to wildfire mitigation programs such as CWPP, CPP, Home Ignition Zone, and potential new programs.Responsible for wildfire mitigation project development, implementation and oversight in conjunction with county and district staff.Projects may include prescribed burning, hand or mechanical fuel removal or disposal and invasive species treatment. Responsible for tracking and ensuring grant funds used through this program are administered following federal grant guidelines and that appropriate documentation is kept.Operates equipment as needed for the proper application of herbicides and adjuvants or directly supervises crew in the proper use of application equipment.Responds in times of emergency such as wildland fires and natural disasters.Occasional heavy lifting required.Work is subject to hazards such as fire, adverse weather, forest insects, wild animals, falling limbs, intense heat, dust, smoke, hazardous debris and difficult terrain.Work Schedule:• Standard work week will be Monday through Friday 0800 hours to 1700 hours but will change frequently and at short notice. Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.• Wildfire and disaster/emergency response requires year-round readiness and may require extended working hours and days.• Require willingness to travel and stay overnight frequently• May be subject to afterhours callback during high fire danger and natural disasters.• Residency required within assigned work area and/or within 45 minutes of the D-1 District Office located at 220 Sardis Road Asheville, NC 28806**Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.
