WSP is seeking an
Assistant Vice President, Bridge Engineer
to join our transportation team in our
Salt Lake City (South Jordan), Utah
office. Be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients’ objectives and solves their challenges. The candidate will provide subject-matter technical support and leadership for asset management, program management, rehabilitation, and new design projects for the public sector. Responsibilities include research, design, concept development, planning, and construction support for load-bearing structures and structural elements, such as bridges and other transportation structures. Provides guidance to PMs and managers that address current and future challenges, and ensures documentation and recommendations account for risk, innovation, and future-ready opportunities. Leads by ensuring responsibilities are delivered with quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality. Your Impact
Assist in the design and management of transportation projects. Function as a design lead and support others in managing projects that have a structure. Lead mid-level professional engineers, engineers-in-training (EITs), and CADD technicians through basic design and plan production. Apply high-level structural and civil engineering techniques to identify improvements for infrastructure project phases involving more complex transportation engineering work, including concept development, preliminary design, final design, and construction. Plan, organize, and supervise engineering activities on bridge projects. Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans, and update infrastructure layout plans requiring coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients. Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design, construction, and rehabilitation of transportation infrastructure projects, ensuring durability of materials and structural soundness from loads and environmental/human influences. Provide innovative solutions related to the design of bridges, transit structures, and other significant structures for state highways, county roads, and city streets. Coordinate with the district structures management team. Lead larger-scale structural engineering projects, coordinating contributors, budgets, hours, expenses, and subcontractors, ensuring on-time delivery and quality. Ensure engineering services align with professional standards, client requirements, budget, scheduling, cost control, quality control, and project objectives. Engage with public or private entities to discuss engineering/construction challenges and programs; develop technical reports and presentations explaining research, findings, and recommendations. Develop a client base for high-level structural engineering services and identify business development opportunities. Maintain and develop the firm’s reputation for technical excellence in bridge engineering. Collaborate with professionals across disciplines and infrastructure authorities on funded improvement and development projects. Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs). Grow and develop the structures team in Utah; stay current in the latest structural engineering techniques and practices. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources; adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline. 10+ years of relevant post-education experience, with emphasis on structural design experience focusing on bridges. Experience managing engineering activities on structure-centered transportation projects. Professional Engineering license required.
Either a PE license issued by the State of Utah or the ability to readily obtain reciprocity.
Extensive knowledge of seismic modeling, assessment, and design of bridge structures. Highly proficient with structural engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and related project applications. Working knowledge of related technical disciplines (track, highway, drainage, geotechnical, hydraulics) for public infrastructure design/construction. Experience in transportation infrastructure planning, design, and program management across rehabilitation, reconstruction, new design, and construction projects. Strong knowledge of relevant structural codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. Ability to perform technical computations, interpret plans/specifications, and apply regulations. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Self-leadership with ability to guide mid-level to senior team members and maintain QA/QC. Proficiency with technical writing, office software, design software (e.g., Bentley MicroStation), and engineering tools. Experience delivering technically complex documents and deliverables. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to analysis and decisions. Ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors and team members safely and effectively; adaptable to changing schedules. Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, and harassment policies. Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs. Preferred Qualifications
