Assistant Vice President, Bridge Engineer
WSP is seeking an
Assistant Vice President, Bridge Engineer
to lead design and management of bridge projects in Salt Lake City (South Jordan), Utah, managing asset‑management, program‑management, rehabilitation, and new‑design projects for the public sector. The role provides technical support and leadership, guiding PMs and managers through risk, innovation, and future‑ready opportunities, and ensuring deliverables meet or exceed industry standards for safety, structural soundness, and functionality.
Responsibilities
Assist in the design and management of transportation projects, acting as a design lead and supporting others in handling structure‑centric projects.
Lead mid‑level professional engineers, engineers‑in‑training (EITs), and CADD technicians through design and plan production.
Apply high‑level structural and civil engineering techniques to identify improvements across all project phases.
Plan, organize, and supervise engineering activities on bridge projects.
Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and update infrastructure layout plans in coordination with owners, other disciplines, and clients.
Manage projects from inception to completion, ensuring durability, structural soundness, and compliance with environmental and human influence loads.
Provide innovative solutions for bridge, transit, and other significant structures on state highways, county roads, and city streets.
Coordinate with district structures management and oversight teams.
Oversee large‑scale structural engineering projects, managing budgets, monitoring events, tracking hours and expenses, and supervising subcontractors and employees.
Ensure engineering services meet professional standards, client requirements, budget control, scheduling, cost engineering, quality control, and project objectives.
Meet with public or private entities to discuss engineering and construction challenges.
Develop and present technical reports, ensuring clear communication of research, findings, and recommendations.
Build a client base for high‑level structural engineering services and identify business development opportunities.
Maintain and enhance the firm’s reputation for technical excellence in bridge engineering.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary professionals and infrastructure authorities on funded improvement and development projects.
Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
Grow and develop the structures team in Utah.
Keep current with latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
Exercise ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and uphold WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
10+ years of post‑education experience, focusing on structural bridge design.
Experience managing engineering activities on structure‑centered transportation projects.
Professional Engineering license (State of Utah or ability to obtain reciprocity).
Extensive knowledge of seismic modeling, assessment, and design of bridge structures.
Proficiency with structural engineering principles, design/build practices, and project-related issue resolution.
Working knowledge of complementary disciplines such as track, highway, drainage, geotechnical, and hydraulics.
Expertise in transportation infrastructure planning, design, and program management, including rehabilitation, reconstruction, new design, and construction projects.
Strong knowledge of relevant structural codes, regulations, and record‑keeping requirements.
Proficient in technical computations and calculations, interpreting plans, specifications, and regulations.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for both engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
Strong self‑leadership and the ability to work independently with meticulous QA/QC adherence.
Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, design software (e.g., Bentley MicroStation), and related tools.
Experienced in reviewing documents and preparing complex technical deliverables.
Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills for data analysis and solution design.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors and others safely and efficiently.
Flexibility for varied schedules to meet business needs and adapt to change in a high‑pressure environment.
Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project demands.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) projects.
