Senior Lead Mental Health Technician (SLMHT)

Shift Schedule:
Evenings/Nights.
The Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108‑bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment program for adolescents (ages 11‑18) requiring psychiatric and behavioral health care. The setting includes an on‑site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming in a scenic coastal city near Washington, D.C.
The Senior Lead Mental Health Technician (SLMHT) assists Program Managers with supervising 2‑4 units, oversees all resident issues, and promotes a team approach to therapeutic interventions. Responsibilities include providing in‑service training, monitoring unit and school activities, preparing evaluations and performance feedback, and serving as a resource for the interdisciplinary treatment team.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Orients new residents to the complex ensuring a warm welcome and understanding of program expectations.
Inventories residents’ personal belongings upon admission, during receipt of additional items, and prior to discharge.
Plans, implements, evaluates activities, and engages residents and staff in those activities.
Develops, implements, facilitates, and documents specialty groups utilizing individual expertise and talent.
Plans and implements resident social activities both on and off campus.
Plans, implements and supervises resident outings.
Transports residents on outings, appointments, and TLOA as assigned.
Ensures schedule of activities is followed and problem‑solves when the schedule cannot be followed.
Escorts residents to cafeteria, monitors behavior, role‑models appropriate mealtime behavior, assists with following special dietary guidelines, and redirects inappropriate behavior.
Assists with the implementation of the education program, including tutoring; ensures homework is completed. May assist as a paraprofessional (where applicable).
Completes routine and special precaution rounds, initiates corrective action related to resident behavior and safety issues.
Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications
Must be at least 21 years of age.
One of the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related Human Services field and at least one year of experience in a residential or inpatient psychiatric setting.
Associate’s degree in Psychology or related field and two to four years of experience in a residential or inpatient psychiatric setting.
High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of five years of experience working with children, including one to two years in a residential, acute, or inpatient psychiatric setting; one year of previous supervisory experience is preferred.
