Senior Lead Mental Health Technician (SLMHT)
Shift Schedule: Evenings/Nights
Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Newport News has an on‑site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.
Job Summary The SLMHT will assist the Program Managers with supervising anywhere from 2-4 units and have responsibility for all issues concerning the residents of their respective units. Provide in‑service training to all unit staff, both in the unit specific orientation and the facility‑wide orientation for Mental Health Technician (MHT) in response to evolving standards of quality and regulatory requirements. In on‑going consultation with assigned RN and lead teacher, monitor unit and school activities and daily duties assigned to the MHTs. In order to ensure safety and consistency in treating the patients, the SLMHT will responsibly encourage a team approach to therapeutic interventions. Assist with providing annual evaluations and quarterly feedback on performance to each staff member. The role of the SLMHT is to resource members of the interdisciplinary treatment team in maintaining a therapeutic milieu to foster achievement of goals set by the treatment team and school‑based instructional plans (IEP, 504 Plan, IIP).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Orients new residents to the complex to ensure they receive a warm welcome and understand program expectations to be maintained.
Inventories residents’ personal belonging upon admission, as additional/new items are received and prior to discharge.
Plans, implements, evaluates activities on the complex and engages residents and self in same activities.
Develops, implements, facilitates and documents specialty groups utilizing individual expertise and talent.
Plans and implements resident social activities both on and off campus.
Plans, implements and supervises resident outings.
Transports residents on outings, appointments and TLOA as assigned.
Ensures schedule of activities is followed and engages in problem solving when schedule is unable to be followed.
Escorts residents to cafeteria, monitors behavior, role models appropriate mealtime behavior, assists with following special dietary guidelines and redirects inappropriate behavior.
Assists with implementation of education program to include tutoring; ensures homework is completed. May be asked to assist as a paraprofessional (where applicable) to include such things as working with the students, aiding the teacher, parent conferences, assisting with Special Education and other clerical support.
Completes routine and special precaution rounds in a staggered fashion and initiates corrective action related to resident’s behavior and safety issues.
Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications Must be at least 21 years of age.
A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field in Human Services from an accredited University or College and at least one (1) year of experience working in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting
An Associate’s Degree in Psychology or related field from an accredited University or College and at least two (2) to four (4) years of experience working in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting
A High School Diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D.) and a minimum of five (5) years of experience working with children with at least one (1) to two (2) years in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting. One (1) year of previous supervisory experience or as a Lead MHT preferred
