Position Summary
The Senior Oil & Gas Accountant is responsible for leading complex accounting activities related to upstream oil and gas operations, including revenue accounting, joint interest billing, production accounting, and general ledger management. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial data and provides analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate has strong industry experience, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Revenue Accounting
Prepare and review monthly revenue entries using check detail as well as detail pulled from EnergyLink.
Reconcile production volumes, pricing, and sales to verify revenue accuracy.
Analyze revenue variances and prepare supporting schedules.
Update Revenue decks in accounting system and book any adjustments as necessary.
Confirm correct billing percentages from Operators.
Review Overhead being charged and confirm correct amounts per COPAS guidelines.
Review AFEs and ensure proper cost tracking and authorization.
Update JIB decks in accounting system and book any adjustments as necessary.
General Ledger & Reporting
Prepare and post monthly journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
Put together monthly Fund distribution statements and reconcile all Fund bank accounts.
Reconcile complex balance sheet accounts, including suspense, A/R, A/P, and intercompany accounts.
Assist with month‑end and year‑end close to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Support internal and external audits by providing detailed schedules and documentation.
Regulatory & Compliance
Ensure accounting practices align with GAAP and industry standards.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Work with land, production, operations, and marketing teams to gather data and resolve discrepancies.
Participate in process improvements to increase automation, accuracy, and efficiency.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
3-5+ years of oil and gas accounting experience (upstream preferred).
Strong understanding of revenue, JIB, production, and general ledger accounting.
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with oil & gas accounting software.
Preferred
CPA or CPA‑eligible.
Experience with systems such as WolfePak, OGsys, Enertia, SAP, or similar.
Knowledge of U.S. GAAP, COPAS guidelines, and SEC reporting (if applicable).
Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Proactive, team‑oriented, and able to work independently.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Occasional travel to field offices or partner meetings may be required.
