Responsibilities

Prescribed Fire Training, Education and Capacity Building (50%) – supervise students, coordinate and instruct NWCG and other fire courses, arrange resources, manage logistics.

Leadership and Programmatic Support (25%) – provide technical leadership, support budget planning, maintain partnerships.

On‑Ground Planning and Operations (20%) – assist with prescribed fire implementation, conduct site visits, lead crews, maintain equipment, develop burn plans.

Other Work Responsibilities (5%) – deliver educational outreach, maintain digital platforms, produce program materials, secure external funding, execute event logistics.

Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred or bachelor’s degree with 5+ years related experience.

Strong oral and written communication; effective use of electronic and printed media.

Experience training and supervising staff, burn crews or volunteers.

Excellent time and resource management skills.

Knowledge of educational technologies and their appropriate use.

Proficiency in office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Self‑directed, motivated with the ability to multitask and set priorities.

Valid NC driver’s license; ability to lift at least 50 lbs; willingness to drive extended distances and operate a manual transmission vehicle.

Ability to pass the Wildland Firefighting Arduous Work Capacity Test annually; achieve NWCG Single Resource Boss or Incident Commander Type 4 qualification within the first year; attain North Carolina Certified Burn Manager within the first year.

NWCG Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) or higher qualification.

Preferred Qualifications

At least five years of wildland fire experience.

Experience developing experiential learning or training programs.

Demonstrated ability to secure and manage external funding.

Knowledge of planning, conducting, and evaluating Extension or non‑formal education programs.

Willingness to learn new skills, tools, and software; proficiency with ArcGIS, social media program management, and website editing (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix).

Ability to translate complex scientific findings for a non‑technical audience.

Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, work, teach, and interact effectively with all stakeholder groups.

Knowledge of wildland fire, prescribed fire, and southeastern U.S. natural resource management.

Knowledge of the Land‑Grant Mission and the role of Extension.

Proficiency in formal and informal teaching settings.
